License Plates and the Logic of Little People

Children are pro-life; let's work with them and end abortion.

Last night the discussion with my 12 year old daughter Alyssa focused on my impending license plate renewal. Currently the plate spells out "I love Jesus," but the plan is to change it and tailor the message to other motorists.

The idea is to come up with something like "God loves you."

Alyssa was asked, "So, what should I put on the new license plate?"

Immediately she replied, "Babies are people."

I sure wish we could purchase pro-life license plates from the State of Michigan!

Good for you for knowing and understanding the truth, Alyssa, my "pro-life baby."

So this morning I was sitting in the waiting room as my vehicle's oil was being changed, and a man two seats down told me a vulgar Christmas joke. Then, ignoring my facial expression, he decided to tell another one even worse than the first.

Little did the man know his neighbor just came from receiving Jesus in the Eucharist! I took out an image of Jesus crucified along with the phenomenal book "Divine Intimacy," and nonchalantly placed them on the seat between us.

The man left having encountered the Light of the World, and gave me his blessing as he went out the door. +

Today is the Feast of St. Andre Bessette, "The Miracle Man of Montreal"

"I, Joseph Alfred Bessette, Brother Andre, unworthy though I am, rely nevertheless on the Divine Mercy and, earnestly desiring to devote myself to the service of the Adorable Trinity, make to Almighty God the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, according to the sense of the rules and constitutions of this Congregation, in the presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Blessed Virgin Mary conceived without sin, of her worthy spouse St. Joseph, and of all the Heavenly Court, promising to accept whatever employments it may please my superiors to entrust to me." 1

~Read by St. Andre, kneeling before his community,
on the day he made his first temporary vows.

Alfred Bessette was born on August 9, 1845 near Montreal Canada, in Mont St. Gregoire. He was expected to die right after he was born and was quickly baptized, but God still had many other things for this baby to accomplish in his lifetime. Alfred was the 8th child, and was born at a time when many children received little formal education because of the necessity of having to work to survive. His family had a deep faith in God and a special devotion to the Holy Family. Alfred suffered from poor health and chronic stomach problems, and was given special attention by his loving mother.

When Alfred was ten, his father died after being struck by a falling tree. The boy then turned to St. Joseph, who became his very special collaborator. Three years after the death of Alfred's father, his mother died. He said later, "I prayed very little for my mother after her death, but I prayed to her a lot."

The boy then went to live with his aunt. He experienced little success working as a tinsmith, baker, farmhand, apprentice shoemaker, and blacksmith, for this future saint was meant to do other things for God.

As a result of his chronic illness, Alfred was a person of small stature and at times, others made fun of him. At the time, his size was quite a disadvantage in the eyes of the world, because physical strength was important for survival. But God knew of the immeasurable, eternal value of this humble, kind man.

Alfred ended up traveling to the United States in search of work in factories, and sought the intercession of St. Joseph when in need of a job. He worked in New Hampshire, Vermont, and also Connecticut, where he worked at a mill.

In 1867, 22 year-old Alfred returned to Canada and was reunited with Fr. Andre Provencal, his former catechism teacher. Fr. Andre brought Alfred to the Fathers of Holy Cross and pronounced, "I bring you a saint." Alfred later remarked, "When I entered Holy Cross they showed me the door, and I stayed there all my life. "

In 1870, Alfred entered the Congregation of Holy Cross. He was 25 years old. That same year, St. Joseph was proclaimed the Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX. Religious life was rigorous, and Alfred excelled at praying. He changed his name to Brother Andre, in honor of his mentor, and spent forty years as porter of Notre Dame. Brother Andre was well known for his great faith and kindness to people.

He is not remembered for intellectual accomplishments that are so often prized in the eyes of men. Rather, St. Andre is remembered as someone who welcomed people and shared Jesus' unconditional love with them. As a result, they left feeling valued, loved, understood, consoled, and hopeful. Brother Andre truly lived in imitation of Christ by dedicating his life to serving humanity through personal encounters and through prayer. He was able to accomplish much for the greater glory of the Blessed Trinity and for eternal souls because he was willing and because he believed that with God, all things are possible.

Word spread about Brother Andre following the miraculous healing of a man, and he became known as the "Miracle Man of Montreal." Wednesday was the day of the sick in Montreal, and Brother Andre would walk among the sick treating them with kindness and concern. For those who sought physical healing, Alfred encouraged people to use oil that had been burned in front of a statue of St. Joseph, or medals of St. Joseph, and encouraged people to pray novenas.

Brother Andre gave credit for all things to God, through St. Joseph's intercession. Many people were converted through his cooperation with God's will. Not every person who sought his help received physical healing, but no one seeking eternal salvation was denied it. He would say to those who were not granted physical healing, "Accept sickness. God will have an eternity to console you."

People came to see Brother Andre by the hundreds. Sometimes he saw 40 to 50 people an hour. A sign on his door said, "Be Brief."

In addition to ministering to so many people each day while in poor health, Brother Andre faced other challenges as well. The parents of students complained because he received sick people at the school their children attended. The Congregation of Holy Cross also had to deal with the dynamics of having so many people come to see Brother Andre.

Brother Andre also was persecuted, and shared his sorrows in confidence with a trusted friend. There was one man in particular, a physician in Montreal, who persecuted him most severely. The doctor ridiculed Andre's practice of rubbing the sick with St. Joseph's oil or of touching them with medals of St. Joseph. He publicly called Brother Andre "a quack" and "an old fool." He also suggested that the holy man broke his vow of chastity by the way he touched the women who visited him seeking his aid.

Then by order of Divine Providence, the physician's wife suffered a severe nosebleed. Neither her husband nor other doctors could stop the bleeding. The woman instructed her husband, the very man who persecuted the future saint so terribly, to go get him! The doctor's lack of humility led to his refusal, for what would that say about him if he were to summon the man he had worked so hard to discredit. "I love you very much, " he said to her, "but what you ask of me is impossible." His wife insisted, saying, "Do you wish me, whom you say you love very much, to bleed to death? Get Brother Andre."

The doctor set off to summon Brother Andre, who met the doctor at the shrine with a smile on his face. "Doctor, return home; your wife's nosebleed has stopped." The humble and holy Brother Andre had not only interceded to God on the woman's behalf. He had also made it a point to not humiliate the doctor publicly, even after all the abuse he unjustly had to endure from the unhappy, angry man who God loved so much.

When Brother Andre was 60 years old, he accepted the task of overseeing the construction of the world's largest shrine to St. Joseph right there on the hill in front of Notre Dame. St. Joseph had requested that a place be built in Montreal where people could go to worship God. The Congregation of Holy Cross bought land on the hill, and allowed Brother Andre to build a small chapel on it. He saved money cutting students' hair, and in 1904 the first chapel was built on the site. The chapel was expanded to accommodate 100 people and the following week, seven thousand people came.

There was no money for a larger structure, but people who had come to see Brother Andre and became his friends donated, and a larger chapel was built. He moved into the oratory and would see people for most of the day, or he visited the sick. He slept only 1-2 hours a night, if at all, and remarked that when thinking of the people who came to visit him during the day, he felt compelled to pray for them during the night.

At the onset of World War I, construction on the larger church as we know it today stopped. The war was followed by the Great Depression, but Brother Andre was not worried. He called for a procession that included a statue of St. Joseph, and then suggested the statue be placed between the four walls of the partially build structure. He said that if St. Joseph wanted to cover himself, then St. Joesph would provide.

He visited the construction site before Mass, and knew that he would not live to see it completed during his lifetime. This did not bother him and as he explained to people, the church was St. Joseph's project, not his. He referred to himself as "St. Joseph's puppy."

The many hardships and difficulties Brother Andre experienced helped him relate to people. He knew their trials and suffering, and understood that suffering has eternal value and can draw us into closer union with God. He was known to weep when recounting the Passion of Christ. He died on January 6, 1937, at the age of 91. More than one million people attended the funeral of this humble servant of God. He was beatified in Rome 45 years later, and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 17, 2010.

St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal

His body lies in a simple tomb in St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal, which thousands of people continue to visit to worship God and seek physical and spiritual healing. The basilica is one of the largest ecclesiastical buildings in the world and is the largest shrine dedicated to St. Joseph. It is open 365 days a year.

St. Andre is the first male Canadian-born saint and the first saint of the Congregation of Holy Cross. He is a kind and loving intercessor for us all, so be sure to befriend "The Miracle Man of Montreal" and ask for his help living in imitation of Christ.

Live as he did, and make your life a miracle.

O God,

You who are most admirable in your saints,

we petition you to grant us,

On January 6, 1937, the death of a humble doorkeeper for a boys' college drew over a million people to Montreal for his funeral. For 40 years, Brother André Bessette of the Congregation of Holy Cross welcomed people at the door and became known as a miraculous healer. On October 17, 2010, Brother André became the first male Canadian-born saint and the first saint for the Congregation of Holy Cross. Dearest Andre, Nick & Alyssa,

     Merry Christmas! I am very sorry that you did not receive a letter before now, but we have been working very hard guiding precious souls to heaven in these modern times. I also wanted to wait to write you, so that I could send these greetings along with your beloved Aunt Belinda!

     She is with us now, and sends you her love and also “Air Hugs!!” What are those? They sound nice. Do you send air kisses, too? If so, “Air Kisses” from both of us!!

     I do hope that you have enjoyed the treats and ornaments left in your shoes this Advent, and that they are a reminder of the eternal reward that awaits you in heaven, where faithful souls exist forever in joyful union with God our loving Creator.

     I am very proud of all three of you for having lived in imitation of Christ during the past year, Andre, Nick, and Alyssa! That takes great love and also great courage. God is at work in you!

     Again, Merry Christmas, and remember, God is always with you!

In loving memory of our beloved Belinda
September 9, 1963 ~ December 14, 2011

Every single life has purpose.

Belinda Bondi, age 48, passed away December 14th, 2011. She is the daughter of Herta and the late Joseph Bondi; the sister of Joseph (Pamela) Bondi and Michele Bondi Bottesi; aunt of Andre, Allison, Nick, Alyssa, and Morgan; niece of Laura Bondi Carchia; cousin of RoseMarie LaRue; friend of many lovely people. Belinda also is survived by dearly loved relatives in Germany and Italy.

Prior to the funeral Mass.

Belinda passed into eternal life on December 14th, the Feast of St. John of the Cross, following a three year battle with cancer and journey along the Way of the Cross. She embraced her cross faithfully and heroically while loving much, and truly lived, loved, served, and suffered in imitation of Christ. We love our dear Belinda forever, and today are another day closer to seeing her again, in eternity.

In a dream I had shortly before God called her home, Belinda was walking down a corridor. She was heading toward eternity, and my three children Andre, Nick, and Alyssa were walking by her side (she was a second mother to them). Belinda was leaving a trail of relics in her wake, and I collected them as we journeyed forward. A great many relics trailed behind her, of many different sizes and shapes. Some of the saints I knew, and others I did not.

Belinda is a very, very holy soul, who now lives forever among the saints. She is most willing to intercede on your behalf from the Beatific Vision, so consider her your sister and friend in heaven, and be sure to turn to her in times of trial, or for inspiration on your journey toward greater Divine intimacy. She continues to value being of service to anyone in need.

The morning after Belinda passed away, during a Holy Hour before Holy Mass, I stared deep into eternity and said to her over and over, "I'm looking for you."

This afternoon, the day after her funeral, my children and I were returning home after visiting with family, when the grief of our temporary separation caused me great sorrow. Then, I noticed the license plate of the vehicle in front of us: LOOK4ME.

Yes, my dear sister, I will always look for you, and I will always find you, because I know just where you are.

On behalf of Belinda and her entire family, I thank everyone for all you have done during her life and her illness to bring the love and mercy of Christ to us. Your kindness has imitated our most loving Savior, Who poured Himself out completely for each one of us. It meant a lot to her, and it meant a lot to us, which also meant a great deal to her because she always thought of other people first.

Belinda loved Christmas because she loved God,
and as dear friend Susan pointed out before the funeral Mass,
Belinda gets to celebrate Christmas with Jesus!

Happy Birthday, beloved Savior!
Thank You for coming
and for living, loving, serving, and suffering for each one of us.

Thank You for creating Belinda.
She remains an irreplaceable gift to us,
and we love her forever.

Belinda was a second mother to our next generation.

May all those who mourn find their strength and consolation in Jesus,
and may the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace.

Some thoughts worth sharing, in honor of our beloved St. Nicholas on his feast day. +

From My Daily Bread, by Anthony Paone, S.J. (emphasis added):

"My Child, do you wish to know the secret of My saints? Would you like to understand how they could suffer so many things in peace, and even with joy? They meditated often on My trials and sufferings. By burying themselves in My life, they drew strength for many trials. They placed their hearts within Mine and were filled with a love which could bear all things for my sake.

"Come to Me and enter into My heart. You will find strength and comfort in your daily trials and sufferings. You will no longer mind being slighted and neglected by people. You will face evil tongues and bad will with a calm and peaceful soul.

"All this will you do because you know Me and understand My life. I, too, was despised by men in My earthly life. In My hour of greatest need, while My enemies mocked and insulted Me, I was abandoned by My friends. For love of you I consented to be despised and to suffer an untold agony. Will you, then, dare to complain when you have to bear similar things? I had enemies who said many evil things against Me. Can you, then, grieve because you do not enjoy the friendship and good will of everyone? How can you be a true follower of Mine, if you will not carry My cross? Those who wish to reign with Me, must suffer and fight with Me." 1

From Divine Intimacy, by Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen, O.C.D.:

"If any one love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him" (Jn 14,23). This is the great mystery of the divine indwelling, which assures us, in Jesus' own words, that the one, triune God is not far away from a soul who loves Him, but rather lives in it and makes His abode in it." 2

"Catholic doctrine teaches that God is necessarily present in all His creatures. In fact, in order to exist, they need not only to be created by Him, but also to be kept in existence by Him. God conserves them by operating in them, that is, by continually communicating existence to them. Since He operates by His substance, He is present wherever He operates, and therefore, in all His creatures. Thus God is everywhere, even in the souls of unbelievers and sinners. 2

"However, in the case of a soul filled with sanctifying grace and charity, there is a special presence of God, which was promised by Jesus, and which is called indwelling. 2
"The divine Persons are said to be indwelling in as much as They are present to intellectual creatures in a way that lies beyond human comprehension, and are known and loved by them in a purely supernatural manner alone, within the deepest sanctuary of the soul (Enc. Mystici Corporis). In other words, the three divine Persons are present in the soul that is in the state of grace, so that it may know Them by faith, and love Them by charity, and that They may even make Themselves known to the soul by the intimate illumination of the gifts of the Holy Spirit." 2

"The three Persons of the Blessed Trinity are present in a soul in the state of grace to invite it to live in Their society, in intimate friendship with Them. Jesus states this clearly and authoritatively: 'Abide in Me and I in you' (Jn. 15,4)...

"...God is within you as your Father and as the sweet Guest of your soul, to invite you to live, not only by Him, but with Him and in Him. " 2

This Advent, recognize, accept, return, and share the immeasurable, unfathomable, and eternal love God has for you. Grow in sanctity. Meet Him in the deepest sanctuary of your soul. Be willing to suffer and to fight with Him for precious, eternal souls.

December 6th is the Feast of St. Nicholas

Patron Saint of children, sailors, fishermen, merchants, the falsely accused, repentant thieves, pharmacists, archers, and pawnbrokers.

St. Nicholas was born during the third century, circa 270 A.D., in the village of Patara, Lycia, Asia Minor. His birthplace was at the time part of Greek territory and is now considered the southern coast of Turkey. Nicholas' parents were financially and spiritually wealthy and raised him to be a devout Christian. They died during an epidemic when he was still young.

Nicholas eventually sold everything he inherited from his parents to help the needy, sick, and suffering, and dedicated his life to serving God. He was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man, living in imitation of Christ by serving as protector and helper of those in need. Nicholas became well known for his generosity, a love for children, and concern for sailors and ships. Word of him spread as sailors told the story of his holy life on their journeys around the world. Nicholas was well known for his giving of gifts in secret, such as leaving coins in the shoes of people in need who left them out, and became the model for Santa Claus.

In his time Christians were terribly persecuted by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who had many bishops, priests, and deacons exiled, imprisoned, and tortured for their love of God. Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith as well and was imprisoned. Following his release he attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. Nicholas died on December 6, AD 343-6 in Myra, Lycia. Manna formed in his grave and the healing powers of this substance contributed to the spreading of devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration. His relics were translated to Bari, Italy in 1087 and his major shrine is the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari.

Traditional celebrations on this day vary. St. Nicholas is celebrated as patron saint of many families. He is one of the most celebrated saints in Macedonia. In Poland children find candy and small gifts under their pillow the morning of his feast day. The American Santa Claus and Anglo-Canadian and British Father Christmas were inspired by legends of him.

Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of the town of Beit Jala, a little town two kilometers to the west of Bethlehem. St. Nicholas spent four years there during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Every year a solomn Divine Liturgy is held in the Orthodox church of St. Nicholas, and is usually followed by exhibitions, parades, and activities. Arab Palestinian Christians of all denominations and churches go there to participate in prayers and celebrations. 1

Celebrations of his feast day take place on the eve of the feast or on the actual feast day. One significant way to celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas is to emphasize the importance of giving and service as we strive to live in imitation of Christ. This can take place within the context of a celebration at home, where activities can center around the celebration of the Season of Advent, and a special meal together can include the retelling of his story and legacy. The Christian values of St. Nicholas can be shared by helping others in need, being kind to others, or resolving to overcome a fault.

The Custom of the Shoes

My children continue the global and personal family tradition of leaving one shoe out on the Saturday evenings of Advent. Upon awaking on Sunday morning they rush down and see what surprise St. Nicholas left for them in their shoes. Sometimes they receive candy, and other times they receive a small gift, such as a Christmas ornament signed and dated by St. Nick that is added to the family tree each year.

The actual Custom of the Shoes varies but essentially each child leaves a shoe or boot outside a bedroom door, by the chimney, or by the front door on the eve of St. Nicholas’ feast day. That evening the family is visited by “St. Nicholas” who has a wrapped gift in one hand and a stick in the other. Each child is evaluated on their behavior throughout the preceding year.

St. Nicholas asks, “Tell me now, in what great ways have you grown to deserve the praise and presents of St. Nicholas? And what bad habits have you tried to overcome? Shall I surprise him/her tonight with gifts or the stick?” The children answer, “GIFTS!” In the Netherlands, the myth was that if a child had not been good, they were put in sacks and taken to Spain! Before the children went to bed, the custom was to leave a bit of grain or a carrot in their shoe for St. Nicholas’ horse. 2

The morning of the Feast of St. Nicholas, children awoke to the discovery of gifts that had been left in their shoes overnight, symbols of the spirit of caring and generosity shown by St. Nicholas to others during his walk with Christ. Some children received coal instead if they had been naughty.

May we all strive to imitate the virtues of our advent saint Nicholas, beloved servant of God as we ready our hearts to welcome Jesus on His birthday. "...Nicholas is a good Advent saint for more important reasons than the date of his special day. Whatever he did…may not be as important as the way he did it. Nicholas became so popular because he was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. His life clearly reflected the way each one of us is called to show God’s love to others, especially those in need.” 2

What a beautiful way to honor St. Nicholas and love God in return, by doing what Jesus asks of each one of us.

Prayer to St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas, Glorious Confessor of Christ,
assist us in thy loving kindness.
Glorious St. Nicholas,
my special Patron from thy throne in glory,
thou dost enjoy the presence of God,
turn thine eyes in pity upon me
and attain for me from our Lord
the graces and help that I need
in my spiritual and temporal necessities
and especially this favor (mention)
provided that it be profitable to my salvation.
Be mindful likewise, O Glorious and Saintly Bishop,
of our Sovereign Pontiff of our Holy Church and
of all Christian people.
Bring back to the right way of salvation
all those who are living steeped in sin,
blinded by darkness of ignorance, error and heresy.
Comfort the afflicted, provide the needy.
Strengthen the fearful, defend the oppressed,
give health to the infirm.
Cause all [men] to experience the effects
of thy powerful intercession
with the supreme giver of every good and perfect gift.

Amen.

Say one Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be to the Father.

Pray for us, Oh Blessed Nicholas,
that we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us Pray,

O God who has glorified Blessed St. Nicholas, thine illustrious Confessor and Bishop,by means of countless signs and wonder, and who does not cease daily so to glorify him, grant we beseech thee, that we, being assisted by his merits and prayers, be delivered from the fires of hell and from all dangers through Christ our Lord.

Praise a child for living in imitation of Christ (and be sure to live that way yourself).

This week my three children and I went into a drugstore to pick up our Christmas cards in the photo shop. On the way out, we stopped to purchase a few things at the regular checkout counter.

While waiting in line, our attention focused on the many things on display for sale all around us. There was a box of Christmas ornaments at eye level just to our left. My 14 year-old son Nick spotted them first, and immediately remarked, "THAT's inappropriate."

In the larger display box were smaller boxes containing ornaments of individual characters from a popular television show. The representation of the woman's anatomy and also her outfit were absolutely disgraceful. In fact, they were vulgar.

We had a short discussion about the great dignity of the human person, and how we must do all that we can to preserve our dignity and the dignity of others in an era of tremendous assault against the human person.

Nick was praised for recognizing evil for what it is, and for insisting instead upon what is good.

Then, Nick reached up and picked up the box, TURNED THE ORNAMENT AROUND, and placed it back in the display box. He so valued his dignity, his family's dignity, and the great dignity of shoppers whom he did not even know that would pass by after us, that he turned the box around to place the insulting ornament out of sight.

Nick didn't create this assault against the human person, he didn't profit from it, he didn't encourage it, he didn't enjoy it, and he didn't ignore it. He rejected it, not only for himself, but for the sake of others as well.

Nick has Catholic Courage, and demonstrated authentic Christian love. He lives in imitation of Christ.

Do you?

As we advanced toward the register, Nick delighted us once again by picking up the small box next to it, which contained an ornament with the likeness of a male character on the show, and turned that one around as well.

This Advent, do not support companies that create and sell vulgar products for Christmas. Do not insult our unfathomably loving and merciful Savior. Instead, properly prepare your heart for His coming. Be a living witness to others. Strive to grow in holiness, always loving in greater measure.

Yes, we can do so much better. We should. We must.

Live, love, and serve in imitation of Christ.

Our children deserve a wholesome childhood.

Praise your children for living in imitation of Christ.
Be sure to live that way yourself.

Remember, God is at work in you!

Preparing our hearts for Christmas.

"There is no escaping the one thing necessary in the Christian life, namely saving our souls and purchasing the glorious liberty of the children of God." 1 ~Fulton J. Sheen

It starts just after Halloween. Go to the store to buy anything one is in need of, and chances are you will already see holiday decorations, a major modern indicator that Christmas is coming.

The onslaught of advertisements is more efficient than any military exercise. The ads are everywhere: in our mailboxes, on our mailboxes, in our electronic mailboxes, on our computer screens, phones, and electronic devices, in the papers, magazines, on the radio and on television. People call us and also stop by the house, selling. Can you think of any place where you can go these days where someone isn't trying to sell you something?

And then, there are the solicitations. We are solicited everywhere, often in multiple places by the same sources, most notably through social media. We are absolutely bombarded by the efforts of others to gain access to our money.

That is not to say that all the requests aren't worthy, or that people's intentions aren't good. More often than not, they are. Or at least, they seem to be.

It has all gotten way, way out of hand. Where can you go anymore and be free from people wanting things from you? Where can you go where people genuinely care about you.

We were meant for so much more than this.

"Symbolic it was that Our Lord was paid for out of the temple money which was destined for the purchase of sacrifices; more symbolic still was that He Who took the form of a Servant was sold at the price of a slave." 2 -Fulton J. Sheen

Holiday cards from businesses, solicitors, and charitable causes wish us well, and then ask us for money. The goal of sending cards and well wishes to people on special occasions should be to show genuine affection and care for the recipients. Since when did it become acceptable to use the holidays as an opportunity to send people cards asking them to give us anything? We should be giving instead.

Modern marketing has become a tremendous assault against the dignity of the human person.

Let's all strive to live in imitation of Christ by keeping our focus on Him.

"Our Blessed Lord on the Cross might have made all nature minister to His wounds, He might have turned the Crown of thorns into a garland of roses, His nails into a sceptre, His blood into royal purple, His Cross into a golden throne, His wounds into glittering jewels, but that would have meant the ideal of sitting at the right hand of the Father in His Glory was secondary to an immediate and temporary earthly comfort. Then the purpose of life would have been less important than a moment in it; then the freedom of His Spirit would have been secondary to the healing of His Hands; then the higher self would have been the slave of the lower self- and that is the one thing we are bidden to avoid." 3 -Fulton J. This Advent, let's change the world by focusing on Jesus Christ, and His Economy of Salvation.

Start accumulating those spiritual bouquets! They are among the very best gifts you can give.

It's Thanksgiving week and once again, the marketing machine is in full throttle trying to sell us all happy holidays. Wise men and women know that joy cannot be purchased; it is attained by growing in sanctity, by spending time with Jesus and receiving Him as often as we are able, by asking that we be transformed into Him, and by giving of ourselves generously as we live in imitation of Christ.

As we head into Advent, maintain an eternal perspective and focus on greater Divine intimacy with the One who loves and values each one of us beyond measure. Thank Him for coming. Spend time with Him. Spend less money and spend more of yourself.
